My name is John, and I am a student at a local college. Growing up in a small town meant that there wasn’t much for me to do but find ways to entertain myself outside of school. My family has always been supportive of my creative endeavors, no matter how strange or outlandish they may have seemed at the time.
From an early age, I was interested in art and music; however, it wasn’t until high school that I began exploring these passions more seriously. During those years, I spent many afternoons drawing or playing guitar – activities that helped shape who I am today as an artist and musician. Despite being shy in social situations, my love of making things allowed me to express myself without having to speak.

When it came time to select a college major, there was really only one choice: fine arts with a concentration in painting and sculpture. Although this could have made for a difficult path financially (Crawford & D’Angelo 2018), the thought of pursuing something that brought me so much joy made the decision easy. As expected, things weren’t easy as classes became more demanding and projects more complex; however, with each created piece came great satisfaction – not only from completing an assignment but also from knowing that others were now able to appreciate something crafted by my own two hands (Garforth 2015).
I am now on track to complete my degree this semester while also working part-time at a gallery nearby where some of my work will soon be displayed! Although times can still be tough financially – especially during COVID-19 – nothing makes me smile bigger than when people admire what I have created (Barrera et al 2020). It’s stories like mine which encourage me never give up even when times get hard because eventually you will reach your destination if you stick with it long enough!
