What is the legacy of the Civil Rights Movement?

The Civil Rights Movement of the 1960’s is one particularly powerful moment in America’s history that has shaped and changed our society in many ways. The movement took place primarily during the years between 1954 and 1968, when African Americans sought to fight for their rights as citizens (Tyson, 2009). During this period African Americans used various tactics such as boycotts, sit-ins and marches to bring attention to inequalities in voting rights, education and employment opportunities. By utilizing civil disobedience these activists were able to bring about a change through laws designed to protect them from discrimination due to race or color (McAdam & McCarthy, 2011).

The legacy of the Civil Rights Movement can be seen even today both socially and politically. One major outcome was that it served as a catalyst for other social movements around the world by showing what is possible if people unite together with a common goal (Tyson 2009). Additionally, advances in civil rights have provided greater access not only for African American individuals but also women, Native Americans, LGBTQ individuals and other marginalized groups who are now more empowered than ever before.

Politically speaking there were also numerous changes made during this era including legislation such as the 1964 Civil Rights Act which abolished segregation based on race; 1965 Voting Rights Act which protected African American voters from disenfranchisement; The Fair Housing Act which outlawed housing discrimination; Title IX which guaranteed fair treatment of male and female students at schools receiving federal funding; The Immigrationes Reform Law of 1965 ,which eliminated discriminatory national origin quotas (McAdam & McCarthy 2011 ). All of these laws enabled marginalized communities full access to political participation while providing avenues through which they could challenge any unequal treatment they faced.

Furthermore due largely in part because of the civil rights movement there has been an increase not only in enrollment rates among minority students into higher education institutions but also graduation rates are higher than ever before( Tyson ,2009) . This shows how strides have been made towards desegregation within educational systems across America while providing greater resources for those traditionally underrepresented groups allowing them equal opportunity regardless their racial backgrounds(Herzog et al., 2020 ).
