Anxiety and depression can have devastating effects on individuals, impacting their psychological, emotional and physical wellbeing. Fortunately, there are effective ways to address these illnesses. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based approach that has been shown to be highly beneficial in treating both anxiety and depression (McDonald et al., 2015). CBT helps individuals identify unhelpful thinking patterns which lead to maladaptive behaviors and emotions. Through the use of techniques such as relaxation methods, mindfulness meditation, problem solving skills and cognitive restructuring; clients learn how to reduce their symptoms by changing their thoughts and behavior (American Psychological Association [APA], 2019).
Medication is also often used in combination with other treatments for both anxiety and depression. Many studies have found the use of antidepressant medications such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI’s) helpful in alleviating symptoms of depression (Kemp et al., 2010). However it should be noted that medication alone is typically not enough to treat either anxiety or depression. For this reason it is important for individuals suffering from either illness to seek professional help so they can receive a combination of therapy, medication and self-care strategies tailored specifically for them.
