As outlined by Lev Vygotsky, humans understand and make meaning from their experiences through interacting with others in their culture and environment. The process of internalizing these meanings is considered “scaffolding,” as knowledge is built upon what was already known before it was acquired (McLeod). This idea is also referred to as the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD), which suggests that individuals learn best when their skills are challenged within a safe structure or support system.

Within Vygotsky’s sociocultural learning theory, there are three main roles: the child’s own natural development, parents/family members/caregivers who may provide assistance or guidance during certain tasks and activities; and lastly educators/mentors who can actively involve themselves in instruction (Vladimirov & Logachev). At ABC Child Care Center, we recognize each role as equally important for successful acquisition of knowledge by our pupils. Our educators collaborate closely with families to ensure that young children experience optimal growth both inside and outside our school walls. We believe strongly in preserving family values while fostering independence among our students at all stages.

Sociocultural Learning Theory

Furthermore, technology provides endless opportunities for learners including simulated environments where students can practice new skills virtually alongside peers or mentors under guided supervision (Giangreco et al., 2019).
