Read “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson, and discuss what is the theme of your story? What was culturally significant about the events and time period of your chosen piece? How did the author use his/her background to craft the characters or setting?

\”The Lottery\” by Shirley Jackson is a story about a small town in New England that holds an annual lottery. The lottery has become such an integral part of their lives and culture that the villagers are oblivious to its significance as they go through the motions of selecting a person to be sacrificed on a yearly basis. In this short story, Jackson explores themes like conformity, tradition, complacency, superstition and human sacrifice.

The events and time period portrayed in \”The Lottery\” are culturally significant because they reflect the attitudes prevalent during the 1940s when it was written. During this era there was still widespread adherence to traditional customs passed down from generation to generation even though many people had started questioning their validity or necessity. This lack of foresight or willingness to examine long-standing traditions can also be seen in other aspects of life including racial segregation, sexism and religious prejudice – all issues which were still accepted at this time despite being challenged by progressive thinkers.

Read “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson, and discuss what is the theme of your story? What was culturally significant about the events and time period of your chosen piece? How did the author use his/her background to craft the characters or setting?

Jackson’s background plays an important role in her crafting of characters and setting for \”The Lottery\”. As she grew up Jewish but without any formal religious training, she was able identify with both sides of cultural observance – blindly following traditions without question yet also feeling detached from them enough not to accept them unquestioningly – something which is reflected in her protagonist Mrs Hutchison who participates reluctantly but dutifully in the lottery ritual. Moreover, as someone from an educated middle class background who experienced anti-Semitism while growing up due mainly to her religion rather than race; Jackson was able to relate specifically with how oppressive beliefs can take hold within communities if left unchecked – which is demonstrated clearly when none of the villagers speak out against the ritual until after it has been carried out each year regardless of what horrific acts may result from it..

Overall \”The Lottery\” demonstrates how our collective acceptance towards rituals or customs often leads us towards blind compliance even when those same practices have harmful consequences upon individuals within society; demonstrating how important it is for us all to challenge outdated values so we do not continue repeating past mistakes throughout history .
