In some stories, characters come into conflict with the culture in which they live. . Choose a text that shows this kind of conflict.

The text I have chosen to illustrate this kind of conflict is “The Scarlet Letter” by Nathaniel Hawthorne. This novel tells the story of Hester Prynne, a young woman who has committed adultery and is exiled from her Puritan community in Massachusetts Bay Colony for her crime. The novel explores the consequences of violating Puritan social and religious norms, as well as Hester’s inner struggle between her feelings of guilt and defiance against a society that condemns her.

From the very beginning, Hester is seen as an outsider within the community due to her transgression. She wears a bright red letter A upon her breast which symbolizes both her sin and isolation from those around her. Not only does it mark out Hester – it also serves as a constant reminder to those living in the Puritan society, who view adultery with such distaste and disapproval, that no one is above its laws or punishments. As such, she faces rejection from all but a few members of society which forces Hester into solitude, almost becoming one with nature for comfort instead.

Throughout this narrative we see how characters respond differently towards Hester’s actions depending on their individual beliefs; some exhibit compassion while others express disgust over what they perceive as an affront to their faith-based principles. Most notably are Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale (Hester’s lover) who feels remorseful yet unable to confess his own role in their affair; Roger Chillingworth (Hester’s husband) who manipulates Dimmesdale into revealing his involvement; Governor Bellingham whose legalistic perspective stands firm against any sign or suggestion that might encourage further immorality; and finally Pearl (Hester’s daughter), herself ostracized even more than usual because she was born out of wedlock – alluding again here back to how strong the ideals were at this time period concerning marriage vows being sacred commitments not easily broken without severe judgment .

In spite of these cultural pressures which threaten both physical harm if disclosed publicly – and eternal damnation if not fully confessed privately – we witness throughout this work just how courageous and determined Hester remains despite all resistance thrown against her: never wavering nor bending despite criticism passed upon either hurtfully or hastily by anyone under its jurisdiction; instead choosing gracefully accept whatever punishment accordingly imposed upon each decided by local governing body instead while demonstrating unflinching fortitude in face unrelenting persecution endured during process although difficult at times stand unwavering commitment remain true sense self – ultimately culminating eventual forgiveness granted subsequently posthumously once truth revealed after years torment borne patiently now behind them forevermore..
Time passes until eventually some degree peace reclaimed when secret shared amongst group loyalists whom then forgive transgressions committed henceforth reconciled amicably whereby thereby allowing reconciliation occur between individuals finally rectifying situation entirely going forward ever forwardly productively harmoniously still remaining dignified throughout entirety proceedings always maintaining highest respect possible no matter related outcome whether favorable unfavorable disproving strongly sustained message depicted clearly evidentially proving unequivocally why exactly courage matters so much should everyone strive live life courageously no longer hiding away shame anymore thus saving themselves potential disaster ahead headstrong morale boosting indeed!
