Two terms from the Elements of Fiction lecture that can be applied to Edgar Allan Poe’s short story “The Fall of the House of Usher” are tone and atmosphere. Tone is the author’s attitude towards a particular subject, and in this story it is strongly set by Poe’s use of descriptive language which creates an eerie, mysterious mood. The tone is further established through his choice of words such as “decayed,” “forlorn,” and “dreary” which evoke a sense of despair and doom throughout the entire narrative.
Atmosphere refers to the feeling or emotions evoked by certain elements within a text – in Poe’s story this can be seen with his description of characters such as Roderick Usher who suffers from physical as well as mental illness due to previously unnamed family tragedy; this adds to the gloomy atmosphere created by dark imagery used throughout.
Overall I found this story engaging because it did an excellent job at creating suspense while also providing insight into human psychology through its exploration of fear, dread and death – all topics often discussed in Poe\’s works. Additionally, its metaphorical implications regarding sin/guilt resonated with me personally thus making it even more interesting to read than other stories written during that time period.
